General Equal Treatment Act (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, AGG)

to provide broad protection against discrimination in employment. The General Equal Treatment Act is intended to implement four EU directives aiming at the prevention of discrimination, in particular in employment.

Characteristics of discrimination and possible justifications The purpose of the AGG is to prevent or abolish discrimination by reason of
  • race or ethnic origin,
  • sex,
  • religion or philosophy of life,
  • disability,
  • age, or
  • sexual identity.
